uClinux, pronounced "microcontroller linux" is a widely distributed Linux operating system for embedded systems. It is:
- free
- open-source
- proven to be portable to Coldfire micros
Why Linux at all?
The ease of use and development for an operating system, as well as already formed applications make it desirable to put an operating system on a microcontroller. Linux is not the only operating system available for embedded systems, but it is one of the most widely used, meaning that the applications for it are probably more stable and more plentiful than those of other embedded operating systems. In addition, Linux has been proven to be a valued choice for web server applications. With the added advantage of a small footprint, scalable by customizing the application and feature set, these features make Linux a strong choice for an embedded OS in the application of this project.In summary, uClinux plays the role of an embedded operating system with a built in web server that is known to support cgi.
