GUI Based Wireless Industrial Controller
by Maria Perez, Pedro Febles, and Jared Ramlal Advisors: Dr. Brian D. Huggins and Dr. Aleksander Malinowski PC based control of remote systems is of growing importance in many
industries. This project focused on the development of a GUI interface
to control an industrial control system via a wireless link. The project
has three main subsystems: the PC software interface, the wireless modems,
and the controller scheduler on the microcontroller. The GUI is Java-based
and presents an intuitive control interface. The wireless modems are off-the-shelf
components and allow for unlicensed operation in the 900 MHz band via spread
spectrum. Finally, the irrigation scheduler was written in C and runs on
a Hitachi microcontroller. The primary benefit of this project is the conversion
of the user interface from a cumbersome hardware interface to a software
interface. This will permit faster redevelopment of specialized interfaces
and will provide many cost savings opportunities.
