Remote Data Acquisition System
by

Advisor: Dr. Brian Huggins

In today's world economy, it is essential that manufacturing processes be cost effective and maintained in an effective manner. Fluid Logic manufactures flow valves for process applications in the primary metal industry and they want a preventative maintenance system designed for their valves. Fluid Logic intends that this system will prevent catastrophic breakdown by monitoring system degradation as well as aid in trouble shooting.
The Remote Data Acquisition System uses a microprocessor based data acquisition scheme to evaluate valve status as defined by maintenance personnel. The hardware components of this system include a single board computer, RF modems, and a host PC. The single board computer (SBC) will collect data from sensors on Fluid Logic valves and transmit the data to the host PC over an RF link. The program on the SBC allows the user to specify either on-demand or periodic monitoring of the valves. An application called Measure (developed by National Instruments) is used to manage I/O on the host PC through a Microsoft Excel worksheet. This allows for the data to be viewed and analyzed easily by the user using Microsoft Excel.
