Microcontroller Based DC Motor Drive
by

Advisor: Dr. Ronald Jetton

Microprocessors are becoming exceedingly valuable in controlling and regulating various types of systems. Today, microprocessor technology is capable of handling many complex processes with great speed and efficiency. The major theme of this project was to see if a microprocessor could efficiently simplify a DC motor drive system. Using Pulse Width Modulation and a microcontroller, our design is able to control the speed of a 1/3 HP DC motor. Implementing a user friendly interface with an RPM reference command and an optical tachometer feedback, we utilized Motorola's 68HC11 to operate as a proportional controller.
