Laser Signal Transmission, Reception and Processing
by Jay Yamagata Advisor: Mr. Steve Gutschlag A system consisting of a laser diode transmitter, a photo-diode receiver, and processing circuitry was proposed to be placed in a gun for a patented "Shoot out" game. The laser system was required to safely transmit a laser over a fixed distance to a reflective target. The detector was required to detect a reflected pulse, if any, and process the signal. The processing circuitry kept track of the number of times the gun was fired, and recorded a hit when detected. For the game's purposes, a transmitted laser pulse was a "fired round", and a detectable reflection was considered a "hit". Safety played an important part of the design and implementation of
the laser system. Many safeguards were taken to prevent any unsafe operation
of the laser. Laser safety was researched in depth before any of the designs
commenced.
