Split Spectrum Processing to Increase Signal to Noise Ratio
in Ultrasonically Acquired Data
by Todd Burns Advisor: Dr. T. L. Stewart In ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE), flaw indications consist
of a superposition of three separate signals: the desired reflection from
the flaw, the noise signal from the electronics, and the noise signal from
the microstructure of the material being examined. The electronic noise
signal can be significantly reduced by time averaging. The microstructural
noise signal can be reduced by a method known as Split Spectrum Processing
(SSP). In the study, a C-language implementation of the SSP algorithm was
developed and parameters of the technique were adjusted to optimize performance
for both fabricated and real ultrasonic data. Results of these investigations
and a general evaluation of the SSP filter will be presented.
