Vehicle safety could be improved with a tracking system. Especially useful
for fatigued drivers, the system warns the driver when the vehicle strays
off a safe travel path on the roadway. The tracking system utilizes a Macintosh
computer to analyze images captured by a high density video camera. A computer
program processes the image, searching for the roadway lines. After gathering
information on the lines, geometric transformations interpret the data
and determine the actual vehicle position and orientation. The system was
tested with laboratory data, and then with field data. An error analysis
was performed based upon image plane noise analysis and calculated geometric
transformations.
