Digital Control of a DC Motor Using Pulse Width Modulation
by Ephraim Pobe & Mark McDermott Advisors: Dr. R. Jetton & Dr. I. Ahn A control system design, using a microcontroller generated pulse width
modulation to control the velocity of a motor, will be described in the
following presentation. Control systems like this are the basis for robotic
control, automation, and other industrial engineering topics. The DC motor
used was an Electro-Craft model m-1030 with a maximum power of 130 watts
and a maximum current of 60 amps. A moving coil tachometer was used which
was mounted on the rear end of the shaft of the motor to measure the velocity
of the shaft. The advanced 8 bit microcontroller unit of the 68HC11 family
is used in this design. It delivers a control signal to power amplifiers
which drive the motor and specifies the rotational direction of the shaft.
