Active Suspension
by
Scott Jones & Dion Thomas
Advisor: Dr. W. Anakwa

An active suspension system optimizes the vehicle attitude and the tires' contact with road surfaces under any dynamic and static load and surface conditions.

This project deals with the design and construction of a prototype quarter-car model of an active suspension system. The system consists of a sprung mass, two linear springs, pneumatic cylinder and valving, along with position, velocity, and acceleration sensors. An a.c. gearmotor driving a cam is used to simulate a sinusoidal road surface condition. The signals from the sensors are processed by a microcomputer which controls the pneumatic valve via a solid state relay. The double port cylinder positions the sprung mass in accordance with the correction signal.
