Automobile Diagnostics Investigation
by J. Troy Thomas As automobiles become more and more computerized, the need for automated troubleshooting equipment becomes more important. Since mechanics need to be knowledgeable in electronics, the cost of auto repairs are also increasing. Therefore, the market for automobile diagnostic tools is expanding. The project involves the investigation of a diagnostic tool called the
ALLSCAN and the development of an ALLSCAN companion to speed up troubleshooting
time. For this project, the ALLSCAN is being used as a diagnostic data
interface between the electronic control module of the automobile and the
portable computer system which has been designed. The portable computer
system allows more diagnostic data to be examined simultaneously and continuously
on displays. The portable computer system utilizes an 8751H microprocessor
to acquire diagnostic data from the ALLSCAN, organize this data, and then
store the data in 64K bytes of RAM memory. The diagnostic data can then
be downloaded via an RS-232 connection into a personal computer for inspection.
