Professional Elective Stem Information and Requirements

Programs of Study at ECE

The EE/EEC program requires a 12 hour professional elective stem. You should choose the courses making up this stem so as to enhance your competitiveness in the job market, expand your leadership or business capabilities, and/or better prepare you for graduate or professional school. These courses can also be chosen to meet the requirements of a minor or a 2 nd major. Also, no more than 6 hours of EE courses can be applied toward the 12 hours of the professional elective stem. Once you and your academic advisor have identified the courses you want to use to fill the 12 hour professional elective requirement, then you must fill out the PROFESSIONAL ELECTIVE APPROVAL FORM and get it signed by the ECE chair. The original form will be kept in your file and you will be given a copy for your records. The courses approved to fill the professional elective stem constitute a requirement for the BSEE degree.

Suggested Professional Elective Focus Areas

  • Business Minor: You can use your Professional Electives (PEs) to expand your business capabilities by pursuing one of the several minors offered in the Foster College of Business Administration. Some of these minors are listed below with extra hours beyond 130 noted.
    • Minor in Business Administration (ATG 157 + 158, ECO 221(or 100) + 222, QM 262, FIN 322, BMA 342, BMA 352, MTG 315 for a total of 27 hours and requires 9 hours beyond 130 hours. This minor serves non-business students interested in eventually obtaining an MBA.)
    • Minor in Business Studies (ATG 157, ECO 221(or 100), FIN 322, BMA 352, MTG 315 plus 6 hours of approved business courses for a total of 21 hours and requires 6 hours beyond 130 hours.)
    • Management Minor (BMA 352, BMA 356, BMA 357 plus 6 hours of approved BMA courses for a total of 15 hours and requires 3 hours beyond 130 hours.)
    • Marketing Minor (ECO 221(or 100), MTG 315 plus 9 hours of approved 300 level or above MKT courses for a total of 15 hours with 3 hours covered by a general education course and 12 hours covered by PEs.)
  • Advanced Graduate Study: If you are interested in obtaining an advanced degree in electrical engineering, you can use your PEs to take 12 hours of advanced math, physics, and/or EE electives (max of 6 hours). You may use this option to also obtain a minor in math or physics.
  • Bioengineering: If you are interested in obtaining an advanced degree in biomedical engineering or going to medical school you can combine your PEs with EE/EEC program requirements as follows.
    • CHM 110, 111, and 112 or 116 with PHY 110 & 201 (Satisfies the  EE/EEC science requirement)
    • Use your PEs to take at least 12 hours of biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and/or anatomy. Some appropriate courses are BIO 122, 123, 124, or 200, CHM 151, 152, 250, 351, or 362. Check the catalog for prerequisites. Also, see http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/ for information about the Medical College Admission test (MCAT.)
    • EE 582 (Medical Imaging) and/or EE 533 (Digital Image Processing) as EE electives
    • Furthermore, students are urged to leverage this course work by doing a capstone project in the biomedical engineering area.
  • EE Career Specialization: You can combine 6 hours of your PEs with your 4 required EE electives (EE digital electives for EEC majors) to specialize in various areas of electrical and computer engineering appropriate to the industry (biomedical, communications, controls, wireless, etc.) in which you plan to launch a career. Furthermore, it is strongly recommended that the other 6 hours of PEs be chosen from an area of study (e.g. business) that will facilitate your personal career plans.
  • Energy: Use your PEs to take courses offered by the ECE and ME departments to enhance your career options in alternative energy industries.
  • Engineering +: Use your PEs to take courses offered by the CEC, IMET, and/or ME departments to enhance your career options in various industries.
  • Entrepreneurial Engineering: Use your PEs to take business courses (e.g. Technical Entrepreneurship (BMA 385)) as well as appropriate EE electives (max of 6 hours) to learn about technical entrepreneurship and product innovation. Leverage this course work by doing a capstone project to develop an electronic product on which a new venture could be based.
  • International: Use your PEs to enhance your ability to have a career with an international focus by acquiring competence in a foreign language, study abroad, and/or take International Business courses.
  • Patent Law: If you are interested in becoming a patent lawyer you can use your PEs to obtain either a Minor in Political Science or History.
    • Minor in Professional Writing (18 hours with 3 hours covered by ENG 305, 12 hours covered by PEs, and 3 hours required beyond 130 hours.)
    • Minor in Political Science (15 hours with 3 hours covered by a general education course and 12 hours covered by PEs.)
